Happy New Year, and welcome to our new Next Level You weekly unpack!

The focus for this weeks unpack is this great quote from Wednesday by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle.

It can be really difficult to maintain gratitude for the present moment, in the busy-ness of life its very easy to focus on what is on our mind right now, sometimes losing sight completely of what is in front of us right now. That might be our children, our spouse, our next meal etc. If we don’t see it, it’s hard to appreciate it and we can wind up feeling like our life is lacking.

As Tolle notes however, true prosperity – riches, abundance, good fortune – comes from our capacity to feel grateful for not just the people in our life or the things we have, but for the experience of life itself – the integral understanding that life is about balance, that we will encounter equal amounts of support and challenge, both of which will facilitate our growth into the person we will become. We can appreciate the “fullness of life” when we can begin to see the hidden opportunities in the challenges we face, as well as accepting the present moment as it is, unconditionally, regardless of how we think it should look.

When we adopt an attitude of gratitude, we begin to appreciate even very small things, we see the good that is already there and become receptive to even more “goodness”.  But how do we do it? Eckhart Tolle recommends making space for stillness as often as possible, as this is where we can begin to really see the beauty and richness in our life.

How can you make space for stillness this week? 

Here are a couple of suggestions:

– meditate: if you don’t already meditate, consider starting. If you don’t know where to start, Live and Dare has a great program that will help you develop a daily practice.

– start a “blessing book” or gratitude journal. You only need to set aside 5 minutes when you wake up or before you sleep to start. There’s even an app for that!
