Sort your space

ADHD Business Tips - Sort Your Space

Today’s post is a short one because I’m all about taking my own advice!

If you’ve got an ADHD brain there’s a good chance that you’re not the most organised entrepreneur around.. I’d estimate that less than 20% of my ADHD clients have found systems that help to keep their physical space well sorted – for the vast majority it’s just another thing that contributes to an ever-present feeling of overwhelm.

But, there are a bunch of great reasons to spend some time decluttering and organising your space in a way that works for you. These are some my favourites:

Fewer Distractions

A cluttered workspace can be a breeding ground for distractions, making it difficult to stay focused on the task at hand. By organising your workspace, you can reduce visual and physical distractions, allowing you to better concentrate on your work.

Increased Productivity

A tidy and well-organised workspace can help improve productivity for those with an ADHD brain. When everything has its place and is easily accessible, it’s much easier to find what you need and stay on track with tasks, leading to increased efficiency.

Reduced Overwhelm

An overwhelming environment can exacerbate feelings of stress and anxiety for most of us. By decluttering your workspace and creating a more organised environment, you can reduce feelings of overwhelm and create a sense of calm and control.

Enhanced Creativity

While organisation is important, it’s also essential to create a workspace that inspires creativity. By arranging your space in a way that reflects your personality and preferences, you can foster a more creative and stimulating environment that encourages innovation and problem-solving.

Improved Mental Clarity

A clutter-free (or at least less-cluttered!) workspace can lead to improved mental clarity and cognitive function. With fewer distractions and visual clutter, you can think more clearly and make better decisions, ultimately leading to a better experience of work.

Think about the kind of space where you do your best work – chances are that even if it might be considered cluttered by others, it gives you a sense of wellbeing and brings you joy. But even if it’s far from a minimalist paradise, there are probably improvements you can make to get it working even better for you.

Taking the time to sort our physical space has so many benefits but it’s something we usually put off because we have SO. MANY. OTHER. THINGS. to do.

But what if getting our space better organised and working for us could make doing all those other things much easier?

What if it opened up vast amounts of mental space, and delivered clarity and inspiration that completely changed how we even view that endless to-do list?

Wouldn’t it be worth that investment of time?

TRY IT OUT:

Choose a small space to start your sorting – perhaps your desk, a drawer, or even your laptop/work bag. Take the time to set it up just the way you like it, however that looks, so you can get stuff done more efficiently.

After starting a big declutter at home late last year, I’m taking some time off this week to wrap some things up so I can actually start to enjoy the benefits of all my hard work! It can be hard when you run out of momentum before the end, but thankfully our annual hard rubbish collection next week has done well to reignite the fire under me!

While it will mean less time at my desk for work stuff this week, I’m definitely looking forward to enjoying a more user-friendly and streamlined space and the flow on effects of that. Wish me luck!

See you next week!
